I cannot remember a summer as hot as this one in all the years I have been at St. John's. As you know, when the heat goes up, tempers tend to flare.
One day in July, a few guys started arguing with each other. It soon escalated. My temper was short as well so I started yelling at them. Suddenly, everything went quiet. Dave, whom I have known for 13 years, walked up to me and said, "Please don't get mad at us." Then he extended his hand, I took it, and he said, "You are my only family." It was a very humbling moment. I know he was talking not just about me, but about you. He was talking about St. John's and the family you have become to all whom we serve.
Thank you for always being there. Thank you for not giving up on them.
